BALTIMORE/NASHVILLE — Thirty-three years ago, Jim Crockett Promotions partnered with Mid-South Wrestling to present the first ever Jim Crockett Sr. Memorial Cup in New Orleans, Louisiana. On April 27th, 2019, The National Wrestling Alliance (in association with The Crockett Foundation) will partner with Ring of Honor Wrestling to bring the classic tag-team tournament, The Crockett Cup, back to North Carolina at the Cabarrus Arena in Concord, NC. The NWA originally announced the return of the Crockett Cup in October at the NWA 70th Anniversary Event. On that night, Nick Aldis defeated Cody Rhodes to regain the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship in the highest-grossing event in the history of the Nashville Fairgrounds. NWA President Billy Corgan made a commitment to honoring the tradition and legacy upon taking control of the famed organization. “The NWA is known for the legends who have carried the famous Ten Pounds of Gold,” said Billy Corgan. “Jim Crockett Promotions built a foundation in the Mid-Atlantic region with their tag team wrestling in the 70s and 80s. The Crockett Cup in 1986 brought together the best tag teams in the world under one roof. It’s our honor partnering with Ring of Honor to bring this tradition back to North Carolina while supporting the Crockett Foundation with their philanthropy for veterans.” The Crockett Cup comes three weeks after Ring of Honor’s successful partnership with New Japan Pro Wrestling to sell-out Madison Square Garden in New York City on April 6th, 2019. Last night, around the time Terrible was crushing Dragón Lee’s dreams in the #CMLLUniversalChampionshipTournament, another big lucha story was brewing in #Atlanta when Pentagon Jr. and Rey Fenix were given a handshake offer by The #Young Bucks to join All Elite Wrestling. The Lucha Brothers accepted, though no one was sure what kind of a handshake deal they were making. Now some twelve hours later, Chris Jericho has only heightened the confusion. In a Tweet where he seemingly tried to start an angle with the Lucha Brothers by comparing them (unfavorably) to lucha legends like Negro Casas, #ChrisJericho has claimed Pentagon and Fenix have signed exclusively with AEW. A claim like that would normally be gigantic news if there weren’t immediately questioned by Pentagon and Fenix’s status with AAA, CMLL, Impact, Lucha Underground and #MajorLeagueWrestling. Does an AEW agreement meant the Lucha Brothers are leaving those places behind or are they merely adding AEW to the numerous promotions they work for? The answer is the latter. Sources tell #WrestlingWithWrestling that while Pentagon and Fenix will work #AllEliteWrestling dates (likely including #DoubleorNothing in May), they have yet to sign an exclusive deal with them. As such this will allow them to keep fulfilling their promised dates throughout 2019, including #ExpoLucha in August and whatever dates they have with other promotions in the #US or Mexico. In other words, you can now make #AEWWrestling the fifth (and possibly sixth) major promotion #PentagonJr and Fenix will work with in 2019, along with AAA, CMLL, Impact, #MLWWrestling and #Lucha Underground, provided LU is indeed brought back for a fifth season. For now that is a big win for everyone; #LuchaUnderground keeps their two top stars, #ImpactWrestling and #MLWFusion keep their reigning Tag Team Champions, #AAA and #CMLL retain access to two of the top draws in #Mexico and AEW now has access to two of the most exciting #luchadores in the world, one of the best #tagteams in the world and an must see match between the #LuchaBrothers and #theYoungBucks. There is no word yet on is #PentagonandFenix will appear on AEW’s Ticket Sale Party this Thursday in #LasVegas but with rumors floating of #AEW wanting to unveil their whole roster the chances of them being there are high. Here is what he had to say concerning the rumors: "Right now, my main priority is just getting healthy. I just had another shoulder scope yesterday which was my second one in two years. I’ve had ten stem cells procedures and I’ve got the eleventh coming up on February 11th. That, right now, is my main focus. I want to get as strong and healthy as possible and that will take a few months and then I can evaluate where I am physically and decide what route I want to go with wrestling. I have no doubt that no matter what I choose, it will be the right decision. After leaving WWE, I was hurt first and foremost and I’ve essentially saved my career and been blessed by the technology that we have with stem cells where I’ve avoided having five discs fused and a shoulder replacement. I was in a bad way, so it looks like I’m going to have a second chance to actually have a new body and do what a lot of performers wouldn’t have had the opportunity to do. It was noted in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that his surgery is scheduled for February 12th. Rhodes is set to be out of in-ring action for 2-3 months give or take, and he'll be back in time for the first ever AEW event. “Cody will be undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery on February 12 in Atlanta. The surgery will keep him out of action for two to three months, But he’s not scheduled to wrestle until Double Or Nothing on 5/25. His issues with his knee started up in November after he was pulled from the ROH Global Wars tour once hearing his knee pop. Once getting an MRI, it was revealed that he would need surgery to repair the damage done to his meniscus. Rhodes went on to finish his obligations with ROH and NJPW and delayed surgery... #DOUBLEORNOTHING will take place at the #MGM #GrandGardenArena in #LasVegas on Saturday, May 25.
