WWE Smackdown took place from Jacksonville Florida on Tuesday January 8th 2019
Opening segment: The New Daniel Bryan. Summary: Daniel Bryan insulted hot dog-eating and soda-drinking fans backstage before making his way through the crowd and down the steps, where he picked out individual fans and described them as “impotent”, “submissive” and “fickle”. The WWE champion told the crowd that he is changing the planet for the better while they are changing it for the worse. R-Truth then appeared out of nowhere and began to attack him. Grade: B+ Rating...
Match 1: Daniel Bryan vs. R-Truth. Summary: R-Truth put up a good fight and gained a 2-count when he landed a jawbreaker. In the end, he failed to land a splash into the corner and Daniel Bryan hit a running knee to pick up the victory. Following the match, AJ Styles attacked Bryan on the stage and both men were separated by security.
Grade: B Rating...
Match 2: Rey Mysterio & Mustafa Ali vs. Samoa Joe & Andrade “Cien” Almas. Summary: This match was dominated by Rey Mysterio and Mustafa Ali’s high-flying action for a large spell. Samoa Joe then gained momentum for his team when he launched Ali over the announce desk. It looked as though Mysterio and Ali would get the win when Ali hit a 450 on Joe and then took him out at ringside. However, Andrade “Cien” Almas caught Mysterio’s 619 seconds later and hit a gutbuster, followed by a hammerlock DDT, to get the win. Grade: B Rating...
Rusev addresses Lana injury. Summary: Speaking in the middle of the ring, a fired-up Rusev said Shinsuke Nakamura crossed the line last week when Lana got injured during a brawl between the two men. Nakamura appeared from the production truck and replayed the footage in an attempt to prove that Rusev was just as much at fault. When Rusev tried to find his rival backstage, Nakamura attacked him from out of nowhere and backstage personnel were forced to intervene.
Grade: B- Rating...
Match 3: The Bar vs. The Usos. Summary: With a tag title opportunity at stake if they won, The Usos gained momentum when Jey Uso flew through the ropes to take out Sheamus and Jimmy Uso sent Cesaro over the barricade with a dive of his own. Just when both teams were trading finishing moves and putting on an instant classic, Mandy Rose appeared in a towel on the stage and asked Jimmy Uso if she left her “tiny gold shorts and tiny gold top” in his hotel room. Cesaro then hit Jey Uso with a Neutralizer to get the win for The Bar.
Post-match: The Miz challenged The Bar to a tag title match at the Royal Rumble with Shane McMahon. Sheamus hit him with a Brogue Kick and Cesaro accepted. Rose then appeared backstage and removed her towel, revealing her gold attire. Naomi began to brawl with Rose and Sonya Deville until Jimmy Uso broke it up.
Quick thoughts: Fans will complain about the shenanigan finish to such a good match, but I think it added to the story nicely. The Miz-Shane McMahon interactions have been some of the most entertaining segments on SmackDown Live recently, so roll on the Rumble tag match!
Grade: A- Rating...
Match 4: Becky Lynch vs. Charlotte Flair vs. Carmella. Summary: Becky Lynch took control in the early stages but it didn’t take long for Charlotte Flair to gain momentum with a suplex on Lynch and a big boot on Carmella, followed by a moonsault on both women. Carmella and Lynch then had spells of dominance, while Flair failed with a top-rope moonsault to the outside. In the end, after Carmella was unable to put either of her opponents away after superkicks, Lynch made her tap out to the Dis-arm-her to earn a title match against Asuka at the Royal Rumble. Following the match, Asuka appeared and held up her title in Lynch’s face.Decent Wrestling, Unpredictable match which surpassed their encounter at SummerSlam (minus Lynch’s betrayal).
Grade: A- Rating...
