Next we get the New Day back in the locker room playing with pancakes like the usually do and telling people to ask them anything on twitter. This is followed by a Selfie Promo from Goldust and Mandy Rose. Yep, it’s still a thing…
Backstage is AJ Styles walking around. Then all of the sudden a wild Shinsuke Nakamura appears! He stares AJ down for a minute then says he will beat AJ at Wrestlemania. Simple words but it keeps anticipation high for a match that could be a classic.
Break to the ring where Liv Morgan, accompanied by the Riott Squad, is set to face the Smackdown Women’s Champion, Charlotte. Charlotte comes out strong to avenge the beat down she took last week at the hands of the Riott Squad. Suddenly we get a commercial break and when we get back the tides have turned. Liv had a chance to dominate during the match, adding an extra level of credibility to her character and making her more than just a sidekick. Charlotte begins to mount a comeback but the Riott Squad start to interfere. The Ref has had enough and sends them to the back. This allows Charlotte to gain the advantage and makes Liv tap with the Figure 8.
Backstage (again) we have the darling Renee Young interviewing Kevin Owens about his match tonight. He gives the typical heel answers, saying she should ask Sami if he’ll be okay losing to him.
The Bludgeon Brothers make their way to the ring to face -insert random local tag team here-. This match is exactly what you’d think it would be. Those poor men were murdered by Harper and Rowan. Rest In Peace.
As the Bludgeon Brothers bask in their victory, the Usos interrupt and walk down to the ring. The impending clash has everyone on edge but again we are treated to a stare down and they walk by each other. The Usos deliver another fantastic, albeit semi pointless, promo in the ring. These promos are great, don’t get me wrong, they just need to be directed at something or someone. Maybe they are and I just can’t see it.
Daniel Bryan appears on the screen to announce the locker room picked Top Ten!
10. Tye Dillinger
9. Randy Orton
8. Becky Lynch
7. The Usos
6. The New Day
5. Bobby Roode
3. Shinsuke Nakamura
2. Charlotte Flair
1. AJ Styles
We go back to the New Day for more twitter shenanigans and sly Cory Graves references.
Next we get a Adien English/Rusev Selfie Gym Promo that is followed by Adien English coming out to sing a song and introduce Rusev. The crowd loves Rusev so much. Rusev takes on Bobby Roode in a US title bout that surprised me. The pace was perfect, both Rusev and Roode had time to show off good spots and the crowd was behind it a majority of the time. Roode ended up with the victory after a great looking Glorious DDT. As Roode goes to celebrate a wild Randy Orton appears AND RKOs EVERYONE. He then does his Randy pose in the corner just to remind everyone that the Viper is still here.
American Alpha 2.0…I mean Benjamin and Gable are backstage in what looked like the Fashion Files set. They talk about beating a few tag teams then go on to say they’ll take out the Ascension tonight.
Next up is Benjamin and Gable vs. the Ascension! Benjamin and Gable worked really well together, showing a great deal of teamwork in taking out Connor and then Viktor. They get the pin and the win over the Ascension. The crowd wasn’t really into this match but after Randy coming back there’s not much to be surprised about.
We get one more final New Day backstage skit with more pancakes, Cory Graves talk, and them going on about the Top Ten. It’s the New Day so it’s fun, but it makes no sense.
Dear, sweet Renee Young is there backstage with Sami Zayn. He says he’s ready to step out of Kevin’s shadow and show what he’s all about.
Sami is first to the ring, followed by Kevin, and AJ Styles sits at ringside. This match had a good hesitant tone at the beginning. Showing the friendship in battle with the sense of competition. Sami ends up going off on Kevin after a pretty hard slap and business really starts picking up. These two put on a great show that ended up with AJ Style beating both of them down after some trash talk. Daniel Bryan came out to the ring and announced that since there was interference by the champion that there would be a triple threat for the Heavyweight Championship at Fastlane.
Smackdown had a lot of filler this week. Rusev and Bobby Roode was the highlight and the end of the Sami and Kevin Owens fight was predictable but fun. That’s all for this week, till next time folks…
