Now it’s time for Smackdown Live!
The fabulous Renee Young interviews AJ Styles. The crowd is going bananas for AJ. They go over the Fatal-5 way match, then out comes Baron Corbin. He says talks about his match and says he’ll win the championship. He is interrupted by Kevin Owens who, surprisingly, says he’ll win the title as well. Baron and Owens trade barbs for a minute then AJ makes a really awkward joke. Honestly this wasn’t a great segment. It could have been a lot better. Luckily Shane McMahon comes out to save the day. He makes a match between KO and Dolph Ziggler…and it’s happening right now.
Kevin Owens vs. Dolph Ziggler
This match has a good aggressive start, both men exchanging momentum at a fairly decent pace, atleast enough to keep the crowds happy. Ziggler hit an impressive jumping DDT that seems to be a regular for him. Kevin selling like a champ also helped in that regard. Kevin Owens hit a middle rope elbow drop and a swanton bomb that got the crowd further excited. Just as it looked like Ziggler would have the upper hand, here comes Sami Zayn. Ziggler turns his attention to Zayn and catches a super kick from Owens. Owens picks up the win here in a good starting match for Smackdown.
After a small break we get Jinder Mahal. He says he’s got a secret about Bobby Roode. It’s about the Top 10 list. A collective eye roll can be felt around the world. Jinder shows how Roode put himself as #1 and left of Randy Orton. This brings out the Glorious one. Jinder starts to fan the flames of war between Roode and Orton. Bobby does his best to retort before Randy Orton makes his way to the ring. They all go back and forth which culminates in Jinder standing tall over a laid out Roode and Orton. I’m not entirely sure who’s feuding for the title at this point. Jinder appears to be the sneaky heel, turning everyone against one another.
Backstage we get Shane and Daniel Bryan. They argue, like usual, about the US title picture, and about the WWE championship match. Shane then makes Randy Orton vs Bobby Roode at Fastlane. Should be interesting to say the least.
Charlotte/Naomi/Becky Lynch vs the Riott Squad
While not being a big fan of 6 person tag matches, I did enjoy this one a lot. Naomi was a standout with her athleticism hitting many good spots. Ruby Riott, Liv Morgan, and Sarah Logan all looked solid in the ring with a good amount of time for each to show what they’ve got. Charlotte was good as always, that goes without saying. Becky ended up taking a Riott kick to the face and was pinned. The match itself was really good plus or minus a few spots. Worth the watch.
KO and Sami Zayn are backstage. Sami says he owes Kevin the help. He goes on to say that he’ll help him win the WWE title. Kevin looks confused the whole time and they end it with a hug. The plot thickens!
New Day vs Gable and Benjamin
Xaiver woods had some good offense in this, reminding me that he’s more than just a mouth piece. Big E and Chad Gable had a good back and forth involving quite a few belly to belly suplex spots . Benjamin hit a nasty looking spine buster on Woods at one point that made by back hurt all the way on the couch. The match comes to with an end little bit of Kofi interference and Xaiver Woods hitting a shining wizard and pinning blank. Relatively quick match with a few fun spots. As New Day goes to leave the Bludgeon Brothers music hits. They walk to the ring broodingly, stopping right next to the New Day. Rowan turns towards them but Harper puts his hand out and turns him back towards the ring.
Charlotte has a backstage phone promo about Ruby Riott
The Bludgeon Brothers vs *insert local tag team*
The Bludgeon Brothers killed them. The end. Time for a real fight boys.
Next is a Ruby Riott phone promo. She talks about the match and challenges Naomi for next week, along with Charlotte for Fastlane.
After a break is another Phone promo with Baron Corbin. Regular Fastlane promo. He says he’s going to win. Not a bad promo but I can’t get behind the phone things anymore.
We get a Shinsuke Nakamura video package (instead of the real thing)
Main Event time!
AJ Styles vs Baron Corbin
AJ starts out aggressive, not giving Corbin any room, but doesn’t keep it up for long as a fresh Corbin is out there with something to prove. As the match goes on they show Dolph Ziggler watching on the TV backstage. Back to the ring and we get Baron in full control. AJ gets a small window and really turns up the heat on Corbin with a few powerful volleys before he is throw into the announce table. Style immediately bounces back and responds with a Phenomenal forearm. At this point the pace really picks up. Baron hits an amazing Deep 6 on AJ that made me think he my spin out of the ring and into the sky. After another great back and forth AJ hits another Phenomenal forearm and gets the pin on Baron Corbin. But wait…there’s more! Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens show up and beat AJ down. Kevin rolls outside and begins getting the announce table ready for destruction. It looks hopeless for Styles, when all the sudden Baron Corbin comes to the WWE champions rescue and stands tall at the end of the show. Excellent ending to a pretty okay show.
That’s all the time we have for this week folks. Stay tuned to more great wrestling content on this site, follow me on the twitter machine @buuurch1 for more wrestling shenanigans, and as always, take care!
