This is the first Smackdown since FastLane on Sunday and boy was it a doozie.
Smackdown Live starts out with the phenomenal one, AJ Styles! He cuts a promo about his match at FastLane, how he overcame the odds, and his match at WrestleMania 34. Enter Shinsuke Nakamura. He talks about his WrestleMania match as well and they are interrupted by Rusev and Aiden English. There’s a match, and it’s next!
AJ Styles vs Rusev
Rusev looked strong throughout this entire match, hitting some impressive spots including a nasty Machka kick straight to AJ’s face. AJ was quick and cunning as usual, making Rusev look like a monster without making himself look bad. The match ends in a No Contest as Aiden English attacks AJ. Shinsuke is ringside for the match and eventually comes in for the save.
Backstage we get Big E with Dasha. She asks him about his FastLane match. Jimmy USO shows up and says they have to take care of business tonight.
In another backstage area, AJ Styles is walking around, hopefully looking for medical, when he runs into Shinsuke Nakamura. He says he didn’t need his help. Shinsuke says he’s going to do it anyways until WrestleMania, then he’ll take his title with a knee to face.
Big E/Jimmy Uso vs The Bludgeon Brothers
This was basically another squash match for the Bludgeon Brothers with some added theatrics. There was one spot we’re Big E and Jimmy had chairs while the Bludgeon Brothers has their mallets. The mallets won and the Brothers beat everyone down for a few minutes. Bludgeon Brothers leave with the victory.
Backstage is the sweet angel Renee Young with Sami Zayn. He trashed Kevin Owens and Shane McMahon. Simple but effective promo.
Next we have a Charlotte and Asuka segment. There wasn’t really much to this actually. Asuka says she wanted to face the best, Charlotte smiled a lot, the crowd chanted what (which I hate but that’s for another day)
Randy Orton’s music hits while they’re still in the ring. I won’t get on my high horse about this but it was incredibly disrespectful to both women in the ring. Anyways, Randy walks down and talks about winning the US title finally. Bobby Roode interrupts and congratulated him, then says he’ll win that title back and it’ll be GLORIOUS! Cue Jinder Mahal’s music. He also congratulated Randy then says he’ll beat Bobby tonight like he did Randy last week.
Bobby Roode vs Jinder Mahal
This actually was a good paced match with Jinder taking a lot of the control and Bobby hitting some good spots despite Sunil trying to interfere. Jinder Mahal gets the pin after more Sunil interference.
Randy comes in the ring afterwards and RKO’s Jinder just because.
Backstage is my future ex wife, Renee Young, and Kevin Owens. They talk about FastLane and then Kevin rants about Shane McMahon for a while. It’ll culminate later.
Naomi vs Carmella
This was a short match. Carmella had good initial offense followed by a Naomi comeback. Carmella gets the pin after some hair pulling. The highlight of this match was Carmella yelling while Naomi slapped her around. I popped.
Shane McMahon is out in the ring. He talks about his actions in the ring and says it’s very unbecoming of a commissioner. He says he’s taking a leave of absence. He also says that Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn will face each other at WrestleMania. Out comes Kevin Owens. He wanted to wish Shane luck. He and Sami then beat the living hell out of McMahon. Almost to an uncomfortable point. It ends with a powerbomb on a ladder backstage. Shane makes some horrible noises and we go off the air.
This was a good episode. Storylines actually progressed and things made sense. We shouldn’t reward them for finally making something that wasn’t just random things happening but you have to take victories when you can.
That’s it for this weeks folks, join me next week for more Raw without Ronda Rousey, No Brock Lesnar, and hopefully more IC title goodness. Follow me @buuurch1 on the twitter, and as always, take care!
