After watching last night’s edition of NXT. I found myself wondering what the future holds for Kairi Sane. On last night’s show we saw the Pirate Princess defeated for the very first time in singles competition in NXT at the hands of Shayna Baszler. The same woman Kairi defeated in the finals of the Mae Young Classic Women’s Tournament. And this defeat came not by count out or DQ, or by pin fall, but by submission. And a very quick submission it was. And as a fan, one obviously worries what a loss like that could do to such a talent as Kairi Sane.
After coming into NXT and winning the inaugural MYC, it was widely speculated that Sane would be the new face of the NXT’s women’s division. It would be hard to find a suitable replacement for the departing Asuka, but Sane fit the bill perfectly. Coming from Japan’s very popular all women’s promotion Stardom. Sane was arguably one of the top 3 female wrestlers in the world. And in my opinion, WWE was very lucky to have her agree to sign. And once she laced up her boots, put on her pirate gear, and displayed her skills in the ring, especially the absolute beauty that is her Insane Elbow. The fans immediately fell in love with her. With each showing in the MYC. Kairi proved more and more that she’s fully capable of being the face of the NXT Women’s Division.
Then came last night’s defeat by submission. It wasn’t necessarily the defeat itself that worried me. But how she was defeated, and how quickly we saw that hand of hers tap out. Me personally, I do not believe a top baby face should ever be tapping out in less than 5 seconds. I believe it makes the talent look weak. And being a top baby face, and looking weak certainly doesn’t mix well.
So with all that I began to wonder what the direction could be for Kairi going forward. And after about 30 minutes of doubt, I realized one very important thing about Kairi Sane. She has one of the strongest fighting spirits of any female wrestler I’ve seen in years. That fighting spirit was shown first hand in Stardom many times. And it was shown throughout the MYC. If Kairi Sane falls down, you can be sure that she’s going to get back up. Stronger and more determined than before. Kairi said it best in a tweet she posted shortly after her loss to Baszler. “Losing always makes me stronger. My ship still has not sunk. I'll definitely win next time.”
I believe Kairi is 100% correct. A mild speed bump was all this loss was, and if you’re a fan of the Pirate Princess. I say there’s no need for worry. The Captain will know how to steer the ship back on course. And that course will eventually lead to the NXT Women’s Championship.
